In Search of Song: A Sojourn in Ireland and the Music of Amy Beach
Rachel Ladrigan '14 (BM Music Education) has been awarded the 2014 Stanley A. Hamel Traveling Fellowship to pursue research on folksong in Ireland this summer. She will explore connections between the songs and the versions brought over to the US, which were adapted and incorporated by composer Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867-1944).
Born Amy Marcy Cheney in Henniker, NH. in 1867, Mrs. H.H. Beach, as she styled herself after her marriage to a prominent physician in 1885, became the first woman composer to achieve wide recognition in America.
