The New Hampshire Youth Band
The New Hampshire Youth Band provides an enrichment experience to dedicated players of concert band instruments in middle school and high school, grades 6-12. The band is conducted by Professor Mark DeTurk, Coordinator of Music Education at UNH, and Eric Kobb, Band Director at the Cooperative Middle School in Stratham, NH. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Paul Creative Arts Center at the University of New Hampshire.
Band members benefit from the resources and opportunities available on a college campus including excellent equipment, a beautiful concert hall, and assistance from college music students who work patiently with each student to help them perform sophisticated, age-appropriate music at a high level. Students who have enjoyed the SYMS (Summer Youth Music School) programs at UNH seem to really enjoy and benefit from the New Hampshire Youth Band experience.
The band meets for two ten-week sessions each year. Ten rehearsals in the fall, beginning Wednesday, September 14, 2016, will precede the fall concert on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 7 pm. (Note: this concert was originally scheduled for November 9) The winter session rehearsals begin Wednesday, January 25, 2017 with the final concert on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 7:00 pm. Tuition is $100 per semester. Concert admission is free of charge. Interested families should contact Professor DeTurk at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the UNH Department of Music at (603)862-2404. Please provide the following information: name, email, instrument, grade, and name of school.
The Youth Band annually undertakes a special project. Early discussions of a trip this spring, at extra cost, are in progress. In 2012 the band offered its members an optional spring trip to New York City and Lincoln Center, including viewing the award winning Broadway show, War Horse.
