Spring semester study in Spanish and other disciplines at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the University of Granada.
The Granada Study Abroad Program in Spain is a semester program at the University of Granada offered in conjunction with the "Centro de Lenguas Modernas," a division of the University of Granada located in an attractive downtown building. All of the facilities of the University are available to our students. Students from all over the world study in the "Centro" program and Spanish is therefore the common language.
The semester-long, UNH program is designed to immerse students in Spanish language and culture. Program benefits include:

At the time of application, all students are expected to meet the following criteria:
- At least 12 credits earned at UNH
- Freshmen students not meeting the 12-credit requirement may be allowed to participate in the program. Approval is needed from both the Program Faculty Director. Contact the COLA Center for Study Abroad for guidance.
- A declared major
- A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
- Students who do not have a declared major or who have an established GPA between 2.0 and 2.5 may still apply. Admission will be at the discretion of the program faculty director.
- Good standing with the Student Conduct System
- A student who is on probation, regardless of the underlying violation, must successfully petition through the Academic Standards and Advising Committee (ASAC) for permission to participate. Students who have had a past violation will also be required to petition. Please contact your Dean’s Office for more guidance and the petition form, if needed.
This program is open to students who will have successfully completed at least Spanish 504 or its equivalent prior to the start of the program. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of the Faculty Director.
2024 Program Calendar
- January 21 or 22: Students arrive in Granada
- January 24: Level test at CLM (to determine course placement)
- February 1: Classes begin
- May 23: Classes end
- May 20-22: Final Exams
- May 24: Earliest departure date
Course Registration
Participants will be enrolled as full-time students in a 20-credit placeholder course, SPAN 686 (Spring Semester). Students will note initial course preferences during
the post-acceptance process. A comprehensive language exam takes place upon arrival in Spain after which students make final course selections.
Spring Program Courses
Students take five classes at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas for 4 credits each and receive 20 credits at UNH. Class meetings are Monday through Thursday, with occasional Friday course obligations and possible weekend excursions. All five courses are taught by University of Granada faculty, and excursions are organized by the UNH faculty director. All courses are taught in Spanish. Students should review the "Spring 2024 Course Offerings and Information" document below for detailed guidance on course options. Students should note that these are transfer credits, so even though the course titles and grades will appear on the student's UNH transcript, the grades earned will not factor in the UNH cumulative GPA. Students must earn a C or better for UNH to accept a course's credits.

Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and one hour from the Mediterranean, Granada is one of the principle cities of Spain's Andalusia region. The city's origins can be traced back to pre-Roman times, but Granada reached prominence as a capital of political and cultural signifigance during the medieval period of Moorish rule and into the Renaissance. Many of the city's most famous sites date from this time including the charming Albayzin neighborhood with its narrow tangle of streets and white-washed houses, the massive Renaissance cathedral (Spain's second largest), and (most famously) the Alhambra palace which towers over the city and hypnotizes visitors with the meticulous beauty of its design and gardens.
As a result, Granada is one of Spain's biggest tourist destinations. But it is also a modern urban center with a population of nearly 250,000 which can offer students an amazing social and cultural experience including: an energetic nightlife, some of the Spain's best tapas experiences and incredible culinary traditions, a vibrant musical heritage, and the slow-paced daily pleasures of living in southern Spain.

The student pays UNH tuition and a course fee, which cover tuition and academic fees in Granada for up to 20 credits, room and board (three meals a day), planned excursions and activities (including theatre, concerts, athletics, day trips, museums, trip to Madrid, and other cities such as Cordoba, Sevilla, Mérida, and more). Transportation to and from Granada, books, and personal expenses are not included.

Housing and Meals
Students are housed with local families arranged by the program's homestay coordinator in Granada. Each student is housed with a separate family in order to promote the full language immersion environment. Host families vary widely and many have hosted UNH students for years. Some live in modest apartments in the city center, others live in larger houses in more residential neighborhoods. Your host family couuld be a young couple with small children, a single parent, or a retired couple. Most students live within a short walk to the Centro de Lenguas Modernas, but others may take the bus to get to class. Following acceptance into the program, students complete a housing questionnaire which collects information on student housing preferences and needs. Accomodations are made to the extent possible.
Housing includes internet, hot shower, laundry services, and three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner.) There is wireless internet available at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM) from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

- In-country excursions and activities organized by the faculty director (past examples include trips to Madrid, Valencia, Cordoba, or visits to concerts, tours, or sporting events)

Payment Deadline and Refund Policy
A $200 non-refundable deposit will be required of students by October 10, 2023.

Travel to Spain
- Program Location and Support. Students on the UNH Granada Program study at Centro de Lenguas Modernas, a language institute associated with the University of Granada. Students reside in local host families organized by the program. All host families live within Granada, many within walking distance to the CLM, and most have hosted UNH students for many years. UNH faculty reside in central Granada for the duration of the program and are a primary point of contact for student support.
