Elementary Mathematics Specialist: Certification Only

The UNH Education Department and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics have partnered to offer the Elementary Mathematics Specialist program leading to certification as an Elementary Mathematics Specialist (K-6) in NH. Teachers earning this additional certification become leaders in mathematics education at the school and district level.

Requirements

Certification Only Pathway

To be eligible for this program applicants must meet the following requirements: 

  • A master’s degree in mathematics, education or a related field
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • Hold a valid experienced educator endorsement
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching in a K-6 classroom
  • Complete a certification only application and include college transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation, a personal statement essay, and results of a state and federal background check

Internship Requirements

Candidates seeking certification as an Elementary Mathematics Specialist must complete a three semester hour supervised clinical experience in a school-based setting. Supervision during the practicum is shared between a university supervisor, an on-site mentor, and a school administrator. The requirements for this practicum include working with leaders at the site, district, and state levels as well as guiding teachers, e.g. planning and delivering a professional development session to teachers at the site and/or district level.

Certification requirement: Passing Score (165) on the Praxis II Middle School Mathematics Test
 

Requirements

Certification and M.Ed. in Educational Studies Pathway

(46 credit maximum depending upon prior coursework)

To be eligible for this program applicants must meet the following requirements: 

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • Hold a valid experienced educator endorsement
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching in a K-6 classroom

  • Successful completion of a state and federal background check.

Concluding Experience Inquiry Project                                                           

With the guidance and support of the instructor, program participants will select an issue in education to explore in detail.  They will articulate question(s) for inquiry, conduct a literature review related to their question(s), design and undertake their research study, and report their findings. Program participants will present their work within the context of EDUC 884.

Certification requirement: Passing Score (165) on the Praxis II Middle School Mathematics Test
