The Certification-Only program is an approved post-bachelor’s degree option available to students seeking a second endorsement or those already holding an advanced degree.
EDUCATION 500, Exploring Teaching (or its equivalent) is a prerequisite for admission. Provisional admission before completion of Exploring Teaching is possible in some cases.
Requirements for certification for all students:
- EDUC 605 Educational Perspectives in Critical Times (4 credits) or EDUC 959 Issues in Education (4 credits)
- EDUC 701/801 Human Development and Learning: Educational Psychology (4 credits)
- EDUC 703/803 Alternative Teaching Models (4-8 credits) or the equivalent subject area Methods course (e.g., ENGL 892 and ENGL 810)
- EDUC 751/851 Educating Exceptional Learners (4 credits)
Additional requirements for elementary school certification candidates:
- EDUC706/806 Introduction to Reading Instruction in the Elementary Schools (4 credits)
- MATH 601/801 and MATH 703
- EDUC 900A Fall Internship & Seminar in Teaching (4 credits)
- EDUC 901A Spring internship & Seminar in Teaching (4 credits)
- EDUC 900A and EDUC 901A requires a colloquium or the completion of both EDUC 808 and EDUC 809
Additional requirements for secondary school certification candidates:
- A major or its equivalent in the teaching area for which certification is sought
- EDUC 707/807, Teaching Reading through the Content Areas (required for certification in Art, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, General Science, Physics, or Social Studies)
- EDUC 900&901 Internship & Seminar in Teaching ( 12cr. – two semesters total)
