Overview
The book club led by undergraduate student Katherine Dubois and Professor Lisa Macfarlane will promote peer-to-peer learning and growth by providing a safe space to discuss social issues, guided by the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabelle Wilkerson. The course was created and will be facilitated by undergraduate student Katherine Dubois with Professor Lisa Macfarlane overseeing it.
Beyond exploring Wilkerson’s powerful text, the course will also view related content such as: Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man, papers from the Schomberg Syllabus, and presentations from the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. Additionally, the club plans to visit The Seacoast African American Cultural Center (SAACC) and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
The course will be a 15-week program starting on the week of January 25th and ending on the week of May 9th. It will be available to all UNH students as ENGL 795 (independent study). Students are enrolled in the book club will earn 1 credit pass/fail.
Each meeting will begin with a concise overview of the reading, led by participants. Next, the group will go into discussion questions and let the conversation flow.
“The goal is to have meaningful discussions about the history of Black people in the United States to contribute to a greater understanding of racism and inspire radical change.”
