Portuguese Studies

Program Overview

Why Study Portuguese?

At UNH, the study of Portuguese allows students to encounter, explore, and engage with the fascinating cultures and history of the Portuguese-speaking world. Learners interested in a wide variety of fields – from literature to sustainable agriculture, from engineering to anthropology, from geology to music, from business to postcolonial studies – will find many applications for their knowledge of Portuguese.

Who Speaks Portuguese?

Spoken by over 300,000,000 people worldwide, Portuguese is one of most wildly spoken. It is the official language of an extraordinarily diverse set of countries spread across Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and São Tome and Príncipe. In the United States, the New England region is home to thousands of Portuguese speakers including large communities with roots in Brazil, Cape Verde, and Portugal (especially from the Azores islands).

Courses in Portuguese

Elementary Portuguese (PORT 401 and PORT 402) and Intermediate Portuguese (PORT 503 and PORT 504) are offered every year. Additional courses in literature and culture are offered as faculty availability permits.
