Nancy Smith is principal percussionist of the Portland Symphony and a member of the Boston Ballet Orchestra; she also serves as Timpanist of P.O.R.T. Opera and the Portland Ballet. A graduate of the New England Conservatory, Smith's primary teachers were Everett (Vic) Firth and Massey Johnson. She has been a member of the Jacksonville Symphony, la Orcestra Sinfonica de VeraCruz, the New Hampshire Symphony, and the Connecticut Orchestra. She performs regularly in the Boston area with Boston Lyric Opera, Cantata Singers, and the Handel & Hayden Society. She has over forty production credits with the Maine State Music Theatre, and has appeared at the Ogunquit Playhouse. Her free-lance credits include performances with a wide variety of artists including: Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Johnny Mathis, and the Royal Ballet's of London and Copenhagen. Smith is on the artist faculty of the University of Southern Maine and the University of New Hampshire and has taught at both Bowdoin and Bates Colleges. Smith is an alumnus of the Tanglewood Music Center and the Brevard Music Center.
