Phi Beta Kappa in History!
Professor Elizabeth Carter of the UNH Political Science Department recently shared this photo of her great-grandmother Rose, proudly wearing her Phi Beta Kappa pin, which she earned at the University of Iowa in 1905. According to Carter, Grandma Rose, born Clara Rosa Wilson, was born to George Washington Wilson, a Civil War soldier from the North (Michigan) who moved to Rome, Georgia to help rebuild the South. He became an Episcopalian priest. Her father died on her second birthday, and she was sent up to New York with her sister Marie, where they grew up in an Episcopal orphanage. Marie later became a nun and died of either the Spanish flu or TB after the first World War. Somehow, with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, Rose escaped that all too common fate and ended up at The University of Iowa. She graduated 3rd in her graduating class at a time when not many women went to college. She became a teacher at Osage High School and later moved to Walla Walla, Washington where she taught at St. Paul's. “Her time in Walla Walla and her esteem of Whitman College is a big part of the reason I ended up there for my undergraduate degree. Grandma Rose’s commitment to education has had an immeasurable impact on her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren,” writes Carter.
