Project

  • Exploring Rhetoric Used in American Media Regarding Muslims and Islam

Overview

For Zoie's JROP research she chose to explore rhetoric that is used in American media and news outlets regarding Muslims and Islam in general. Islamophobia is a rising issue in the US and she wants to research how the media impacts American Muslims and Arabs with the language that is used and how it impacts the general public’s opinions. She chose this topic because it is an issue that is very important to her and it affects friends, family, and millions of others who either are Muslim or Arab or those who also have loved ones who are. She is a History, Women’s Studies, International Affairs Major with minors in Arabic, Middle Eastern Studies, Social Justice Leadership, and Anthropology. The focus in all of her studies is on the Middle East and contemporary affairs and issues within the region. To accomplish this research project she will be mostly be looking into on-air news segments regarding Muslims, Arabs, or Islam across a range of well-known news channels. She plans to use CNN, NPR News, and Fox News to get a range of political views and learn how this affects the language that is used. After examining this she plans on using social media, especially Twitter, to look at responses to the news from members of Muslims or Arab communities. To gain a more authentic view of average people’s response to what is said in the news and how it affects them. She also plans on looking into publicized court cases involving Arabs and Muslims in the US and examining the language around them as well.
