Departmental Honors

The Departmental Honors program requires 16 credits of honors coursework, the completion of which enables you to graduate "With Honors." You do not have to be enrolled in the University Honors program (32 credits) to undertake the Departmental Honors program (a 16-credits); however, Departmental Honors can be undertaken as part of the University Honors program. 

Departmental Honors students must maintain an overall 3.20 grade point average and a 3.20 average in the major. Required honors coursework is as follows; the Honors Course Designation Form must be completed for all courses except the honors thesis. 

  • One course in the sounds of language with honors designation (603H Phonetics or 604H Phonology)
  • One course in sentence structure or meaning with honors designation (606H Syntax or 607H Semantics)
  • One additional 700 or 800 level course in linguistics with honors designation chosen in coordination with the linguistics honors program coordinator
  • LING 695H (Senior Honors, 4 credits). Students will write a thesis under the supervision of a faculty member of the Linguistics program or, with approval from the linguistics department coordinator, a faculty member from another department or program. Students are advised to enroll in a 700-level course, or to complete an INCO 590 or 790 or other research experience related to the thesis project in the semester preceding the work on the thesis project.

*If PHIL 550H is used to satisfy the Honors requirement in Linguistics, then it may not be used to satisfy a General Education requirement.

Students who want to take these courses as honors courses will inform the instructor at the beginning of the semester, and will do additional work beyond that required for non-honors students.
