Declaring a Major

Declaring an Art History or Studio Art Major (B.A.)

Students entering the University as first-year or transfer students may declare Art History, Studio Art, or Studio Art/Art Ed as part of the Admissions process.  A portfolio is required for the Studio Art option and the Studio Art/Art Ed option.

Current UNH students interested in declaring Art History will need to complete the change of program process outlined below.

Current UNH students interested in the Studio Art or Studio Art/Art Ed option must first complete Arts 532 Introductory Drawing with a minimum C grade or submit a portfolio for review and then complete the change of program process outlined below.

Declaring a Fine Arts Major (B.F.A.)

Incoming freshmen applicants wishing to enter the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree program must first apply for and be admitted to the B.A. Art major - Studio Art option. Students may submit a BFA portfolio after they begin their studies at UNH, as early as their first semester.  Portfolio reviews for the BFA program are held each semester.Transfer students should contact the department for advice on their candidacy for the B.F.A.

In the event that you are admitted to the B.F.A. program, you will need to complete the change of program process outlined below.

Change of Program Process

Use this process in the following situations: declaring or changing a major within a college, declaring a major in or changing a major to a different college, adding a dual major, adding a second major:

  1. Sign in to my.unh.edu
  2. Search for Webcat and select
  3. Select Student Records
  4. Select Change Major/Option and follow prompts

Use this process in the following situations: declaring a dual degree, declaring or changing to a self-designed major, declaring a third major:

  1. Obtain a paper yellow change of program form from the Registrar's Office or download one here.
  2. Meet with your advisor, and obtain signature and your student academic file.
  3. Go to your current Dean’s Office, obtain signature.
  4. Bring your signed form and file to our office where we will instruct you on next steps.
