Germany: Berlin Program

Students do not need to have taken German coursework to do the program.

Spend your summer living and studying in one of Europe's great cities - while improving your knowledge of German language and culture. The UNH Berlin Program offers students an exciting faculty-guided international opportunity. Program benefits include:

Coursework

In this 5-week program, students earn either 4 or 8 credits. Students enroll in one or both of the following 4-credit courses: 

1) German language course (Required of all participants). Students will receive eighty hours of intensive language instruction at the appropriate level (elementary, intermediate, or advanced) at the BSI Private Language School in central Berlin. No prior German language study is required. On designated weekday afternoons, students will gather for cultural excursions and discussions with the on-site UNH faculty member. Students enrolling for 4 credits can receive the UNH German Program language course equivalent of one semester of language study (ex. GERM 401, 402, 503, 504, 631, or 632). This course is treated as transfer credit meaning the grade will not impact a student's GPA at UNH and a student must receive at least a "C" to earn credit at UNH.

2) GERM 525: Intro to German Culture and Civilization (optional, but strongly encouraged). This UNH faculty-taught course will give students an understanding of modern Germany through weekly readings, visits to culturally and historically important sites in Berlin, and discussions. The course is taught in English and satisfies the World Cultures Discovery Category. UNH credit. Students who have already taken GERM 525 can enroll in a 700-level German course taught by the UNH faculty-in-residence.

Optional Extended Study in Berlin

Students may extend their stays in Berlin over the summer and independently enroll in additional German language coursework at BSI or FUBiS (advanced language only).

Few cities match the historical importance of Berlin. Berlin served as the capital of Prussia, of the German Empire, The Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, and now after forty years of division, of the unified Germany. As the crossroads between eastern and western Europe, today’s Berlin is one of Europe’s most energetic capitals and offers students limitless educational and social opportunities. As part of UNH’s short study program in Berlin, students experience a cosmopolitan city. Youthful, artistic, and hip, Berlin has become a mecca for artists and intellectuals from Germany, Europe, and the world. Berlin offers a large selection of museums, art galleries, theaters, and a vibrant nightlife. A center for business, politics, and culture, Berlin is the driving force for Germany in the 21st century.

Summer school tuition and a course fee will cover instruction, course materials, excursions, and housing. In addition to the fee, you will need funds for meals, for all personal and incidental expenses, and for travel to and from Berlin. Note that the program fee below is estimated for 2020 and is subject to change.

Housing and Meals

Students are housed with host families arranged by the BSI Language Institute. Most families live in modest apartments and are within commuting distance of the BSI Private Language School in Kreuzberg. Students arrange for their own meals but have access to the host family's kitchen. There are also numerous cheap food options in Berlin.

Accepted students will be required to make a non-refundable $300 deposit payment by March 11, 2019.
