J-Term Study Abroad Program
This four-credit course (LLC 555) provides students with an immersive exploration of the art, music, dance, and cultural traditions of the Dominican Republic. The course combines online academic study with a seven-day experiential learning program in Santo Domingo, Santiago de los Caballeros, and the northern coastal region of Puerto Plata.
Students will explore the interconnectedness of Dominican artistic and cultural expressions within their historical and social contexts, from colonial foundations to contemporary life. Special emphasis is placed on Afro-Caribbean traditions, national identity, and the global influence of Dominican music and culture.
Through guided visits, performances, workshops, and community engagement—including time in the historic Zona Colonial—students will gain firsthand insight into Dominican cultural life. The course integrates lectures, site visits, discussions, and reflective writing.

At the time of application, all students are expected to meet the following criteria.
- A minimum of 2.5 GPA at the time of application and departure
- Earned at least 12 credit hours at UNH/PSU at the baccalaureate level:
- Earned at least 32 credit hours at the time of departure:
- No disciplinary record (academic dishonesty, arrest, etc.)
Students establish eligibility with their Dean's Office via the study abroad program application process in UNH Via. If you do not meet these minimum criteria, you may be able to seek approval to participate in the program - please speak to a Global Education Advisor and your Dean's Office about any required additional steps.
In addition to the general eligibility criteria, all students must adhere to the Study Abroad Behavior Policy.
Participation in this study abroad program requires students to act as respectful representatives of their home institution while abroad. Students are expected to demonstrate maturity, responsibility, and cultural sensitivity at all times.
Expectations:
- Respect for Local Culture: Students must respect the customs, traditions, laws, and social norms of the host country.
- Professional Conduct: Students are expected to behave in a courteous and respectful manner toward faculty, program staff, host communities, and peers.
- Academic Engagement: Active participation in all scheduled classes, excursions, and program activities is required.
- Punctuality and Attendance: Students must arrive on time and attend all required program components unless excused.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Students must follow all safety guidelines and instructions provided by program leaders.
- Substance Use: Students must comply with local laws and institutional policies regarding alcohol and prohibited substances.
- Respect for Property: Students are responsible for maintaining accommodations and program facilities in good condition.
Unacceptable Behavior Includes:
- Violating local laws or regulations
- Disruptive, aggressive, or disrespectful behavior
- Harassment or discrimination of any kind
- Academic dishonesty
- Actions that jeopardize personal or group safety
Consequences:
Failure to comply with this policy may result in disciplinary action, including dismissal from the program without refund, academic penalties, or referral to the home institution for further action.

January Term tuition (4 credits) and course fee will cover instruction, excursions, housing, breakfasts and dinners. Students also pay a study abroad administration fee and a mandatory international health insurance fee to UNH. In addition to these fees, you will need funds for all personal and incidental expenses and travel to and from the DR.
