Internships

Internships are an excellent way to get some real word experience, build a network of contacts, and apply what you have learned as a geographer. An internship experience on your resume can also be very attractive to a potential employer and can open doors to a job or career.

It is possible to earn academic credit for your internship by completing GEOG 695, Internship. Students must provide this written proposal form to a supervising faculty member before an internship program is approved. At the end of the semester, the student must make a presentation; provide work samples; or submit a detailed report, log, or portfolio describing the internship experience. This is a 4-credit course that can be taken on a credit/fail basis only.

Geography majors have primarily held internships with mapping companies and planning agencies. Below are examples of past student internship projects.

If you are interested in an internship, please contact the department. Although internships are not always available, it is helpful to register your interest. For a listing of past and current internships, please see our internships database, available in the Geography office, Huddleston Hall 102.

The UNH Career and Professional Success Office in Hood House lists hundreds of internship opportunities by field and has directories of national internships and international opportunities. Internship postings are also listed on Wildcat Careers, the online service used by UNH to post internship opportunities. Please visit Career Services Internships page, which has very useful information.

The UNH Energy & Campus Development GIS Group (ECD GIS) has partnered with the UNH Geography Department to offer GIS internship opportunities at the UNH Durham campus. Job responsibilities would include supporting various ECD GIS projects using ArcGIS 10, AutoCAD, Trimble RTK GPS unit, ArcPad and Tablet PC, as well as Topcon Robotic Total Station. This internship will have a roughly 60/40 balance of field work to office work. Previous ArcGIS experience would be great, but is not required. Training will be provided on all of the above software and hardware systems. This internship would be completed for credit under geography class GEOG 695. Interested candidates should contact Samuel Lingeman, GIS Administrator, at 862-4218 or Samuel.Lingeman@unh.edu.
