The Civil Discourse Lab

The CDL in partnership with Communication faculty and students focuses on fostering civil conversations on difficult subjects.  More than 25 students, from all majors attend lectures and extracurricular trainings designed to strengthen their ability to faciliate important and respectful conversations and decision making.  We offer a strong curricula that cultivates students understanding of deliberation, information, media influence, rhetoric, and dialogue.  Our students have volunteered in the community for the American Civil Liberties Union, and have facilitated on campus community and university discussions on subjects such as climate change and immigration.  The mission of the Lab is to: strengthen the ability of students and community members to conduct meaningful conversations, collaborate, and weigh decisions around sometimes difficult but important topics to a civil society through research, engaged teaching and praxis.
