Conversation Analysis Lab participants examine recorded, naturally-occurring in-person interactions to illuminate taken-for-granted aspects of everyday social life, enabling you see your own social world in a new way.
In the Conversation Analysis Lab, you can learn:
- how to scientifically analyze human conversation
- how to detect patterns in human ‘body language’
- how you do things with words
- how you create and maintain (or weaken) your social relationships through the choices you make about how you interact
- how the work of society gets done through institutional interactions, including:
- emergency services (police/fire/ambulance work via 911-calls)
- justice/legal system (e.g., courtroom trials, police-citizen traffic stops)
- health care/medicine (e.g., doctor-patient interaction)
- family-school encounters (e.g., parent-teacher conferences)
- journalism and politics (e.g., news interviews, debates)

The Conversation Analysis Lab is interdisciplinary. Conversation Analysis is a field that draws upon and contributes to a wide range of disciplines—including anthropology, communication, ethology, linguistics, LLC (languages, literatures & cultures), psychology, and sociology. It welcomes and aims to attract, serve, and support students, faculty, and interested UNH community members (from COLA, HHS, PAUL College and beyond) who wish to learn more about how to scientifically understand human conversation between people talking casually or at work.
