New Hampshire Youth Band
This fall the New Hampshire Youth Band began its 26th year of providing an enrichment experience to dedicated players of concert band instruments in middle school and high school, grades 7-12. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Paul Creative Arts Center at the University of New Hampshire. Student instrumentalists who love playing, and who seek more challenging and sophisticated experiences enjoy and benefit from this experience. Players return to their school music programs more accomplished and prepared to be student leaders there.
Band members benefit from the resources and opportunities available on a college campus including excellent equipment, a beautiful concert hall, and assistance from college music students who work patiently with each student to help them perform sophisticated, age-appropriate music at a high level. The band is conducted by three band teachers of note. Mark DeTurk (Professor Emeritus of Music at UNH) and Sean Meagher (Director of Bands, Epping, NH) provide experienced leadership.
The band meets for two ten-week sessions each year. Ten rehearsals in the fall precede a fall concert. The winter session rehearsals begin at the end of January with a final concert in April. Tuition is $100 per semester. Concert admission is free of charge. For more information about the program email Mark.DeTurk@unh.edu.
