Edmund G. Miller Award
The Edmund G. Miller Award is given yearly at the Initiation Ceremony to the junior with the highest GPA who accepts membership in Phi Beta Kappa.
The Edmund G. Miller Phi Beta Kappa Fund was established at the University of New Hampshire Foundation, Inc. through the generosity of Edmund G. Miller, Professor Emeritus of English. Dr. Miller was an active member of the Department of English from 1951 through 1987. Although his specialization is 19th century English literature, he is avidly interested in other eras, literatures, and arts. He remains profoundly committed to the principles of liberal education. Among his many activities at the University of New Hampshire, he was a founder and charter member of the UNH Phi Beta Kappa chapter, Beta of New Hampshire, founded in 1952. His strong interest in Phi Beta Kappa led to the creation of this fund.
The purpose of this fund is to recognize excellence in the pursuit of a liberal education through the election of UNH students late in their junior year who have demonstrated superior academic performance. Financial need is not a criterion for the award.
The Secretary/Treasurer and the faculty leadership of the UNH Phi Beta Kappa chapter shall be responsible for the process of selecting the annual recipient of the award. Preference shall be for one award recipient each year, normally the junior with the highest grade point average will be selected, although the Chapter faculty leadership shall have the discretion to make adjustments in keeping with the spirit of the award.
