Casey Golomski, Associate Professor of Anthropology, will give his talk titled Securing Frailty: Racial Inequities and Aspirations for Senior Housing in South Africa.
Are nursing homes Western or white spaces? This talk will look at the historic and present-day racial inequities that shape access to long-term care and housing for older adults in South Africa. With legacies of settler colonialism and structural racism that are intertwined with the United States, this comparative case offers perspectives on cultural competency in clinical care and social welfare, the right to adequate housing, and the quest for social justice for older adults in disenfranchised communities.

The Center for the Humanities annually hosts a series of informal lectures featuring the recipients of faculty fellowships. The talks focus on the fellows’ research. They provide an opportunity for colleagues to learn more about each other’s work and allow the Center to show off some of the intellectual riches it has helped foster.
