Stravinsky in the 20's

Thursday, September 09, 2021 - 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Johnson Theatre

 Stravinsky in the 20's

Director of Bands, Dr. Andrew Boysen Jr., will lead the Velvet Pastures Wind Ensemble in an evening dedicated to Igor Stravinsky. The program will include Symphonies of Wind Instruments, Octet, and Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments. Dr. Mathilde Handelsman, resident artist in piano at UNH, will be the soloist in Concerto. Professor of Musicology, and Department Chair, Rob Haskins, will provide an accompanying lecture on Stravinsky’s music in the twenties.

The Velvet Pastures Wind Ensemble is made up almost entirely of UNH Music alumni. It is dedicated to performing serious wind music at the highest level. The ensemble was founded during the pandemic at a nearby elk farm in Lee, NH from where it draws its name. The first meeting was an open-air reading session dedicated to Stravinsky’s Octet. The all-Stravinsky concert idea was born out of this initial meeting and will be the ensemble’s debut performance.

UNH plans a fully open and in-person fall semester. Some precautions may remain in effect such as decreased density as recommended by the CDC and state public health officials. Any precautions affecting Music Department performances will be noted on our website prior to each performance at https://cola.unh.edu/music/calendar.
