David Richman

David Richman received his B.A. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. from Stanford University. Richman teaches courses in the Interpretation of Shakespeare, Play reading, race and justice in theatre, and the History, Theory and Criticism of Theatre. He has directed UNH students in forty plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Beckett, and other classical and modern dramatists. Most recently, he has directed productions of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; Trina Davies' The Bone Bridge, a world premier and Woodward prize winner about the aftermath of the Bosnian genocide; and his own adaptation of The Odyssey, based on the recently published Emily Wilson translation. In the summer of 2005, he acted Prospero in a production of The Tempest performed on Appledore Island, a role he reprised in the summer of 2017 in Guilford, Connecticut. In 2018, he wrote and performed in a play about Tiresias, the blind prophet of Thebes, at the Jefferson Market Library in New York, and reprised the performance at UNH in January, 2019. In the summer of 2014, he acted King Lear for Shakesperience Productions, a company founded by a UNH alum, and in the winter of 2017, he acted Oedipus at Colonus at UNH. Richman has authored books about Shakespearean comedies and W.B. Yeats' plays, as well as an assortment of articles on Shakespeare and other playwrights. He is a recipient of the Lindberg Award, given to the outstanding teacher-scholar in the College of Liberal Arts and of the 1938 Professorship, awarded for university-wide outstanding teaching. He is the 2018-19 recipient of the Jean C. Brierley Award, given to the outstanding teacher in the university.
