15-day program in English, 10 spent in the city of Dublin

The UNH “Literary Dublin” Summer Program allows students to spend five days pre-departure learning about Irish history and culture and reading its contemporary literature before departing for 10 days in country at the University College Dublin (UCD). Program benefits include:

· Earn 4 UNH credits toward an English major or toward the 128 credits needed for graduation

· Complete your Discovery HUMA requirement

· Experience 20th- and 21st-century literature firsthand while exploring the cosmopolitan city of Dublin and its surroundings

· Ask and explain what is meant by “Irish” to discover the many identities in Ireland beyond that of the Celt, including Jewish, African and Asian Irish

· Gain an appreciation of Ireland’s many challenges of self- and other identity related to its location, conquest, colonization, emigration, religions, and recent global immigration

· If you have Irish heritage, research your genealogy

· Understand the interconnections among Ireland and America

· Appreciate and respect the culture, people, and places of Ireland

· Boost confidence in living in an overseas place (for a short time) among various non-American cultures and ideologies

· Enjoy living in UCD’s modern dorms: each student gets their own bedroom and bathroom; four units open into a common sitting area

The program includes walking tours, cultural fieldtrips to Neolithic remains and, pending cost, the Cliffs of Moher, and opportunities to explore the very safe city of Dublin with peers and on your own. Hiking outside of the city is also available. The week before departure, classes meet three hours daily Monday through Friday; we meet in Dublin the following Monday after Zoom classes conclude and learn actively through a few lectures by Dublin-based faculty and by visiting museums in the city, cultural and historical sites, city squares, through firsthand experimentation in food, and by observation.

Students will earn four English credit hours upon the completion of the program to fulfill English major or minor credits or four credits toward the 128 needed for graduation from UNH. Interested graduate students in English can email the program director.
