April H. Bailey (Ph.D., Yale University) is Assistant Professor of Psychology and director of the BIAS Lab (Bailey Identity and Social Cognition Lab). Her group investigates bias and beliefs about social identities and groups. Her 2022 article, “Based on billions of words on the internet, PEOPLE=MEN,” was published in Science Advances and covered in the popular press by Scientific American and The New Scientist. Her work often addresses gender biases and intersections with other social identities including race and sexual orientation. She uses quantitative methods from social and cognitive psychology as well as approaches from computational linguistics and philosophy. She has published empirical articles in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Media Psychology, and Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and theory and review articles in Trends in Cognitive Sciences and Personality and Social Psychology Review. Her research has received awards from the American Psychological Association and the Society of Philosophy and Psychology, and her dissertation received the highest departmental honor given at Yale, the James Grossman Dissertation Award. She coordinates the Gender Preconference to the national meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Through her research, she seeks to address the psychological roots of unfair social hierarchies and systems of oppression (e.g., sexism and racism) to create a more equitable and inclusive society for all.
