First Monday: The Politics of Ethnic Identity in India and Beyond

Monday, March 01, 2021 - 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

on Zoom

Madhavi Devasher, Assistant Professor of Political Science, will give this First Monday presentation.

Title: The Politics of Ethnic Identity in India and Beyond

Description: Ethnic identity--that of caste and religion--shapes politics in India, affecting electoral choice, political party formation, and ethnic violence. Given this context, how can ethnic groups build bridges with each other and resolve issues of discrimination, economic marginalization, and low representation? Devasher draws upon research from her book on the development of cross-ethnic linkages between parties and voters in India, with a particular focus on Muslims, and applies lessons from the successes and failures of ethnic politics in India to concerns about race in the US.

The Center for the Humanities usually hosts First Monday events at the
Three Chimneys Inn in Durham and is currently hosting them on Zoom.  The events center around short, informal talks by faculty members, designed to give colleagues a window into their work.  We reserve time at the end for questions and conversation.
