Velvet Pastures Wind Ensemble

Friday, September 09, 2022 - 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Paul Creative Arts Center Johnson Theatre

On Friday, September 9, 2022 at 8PM, Director of Bands, Dr. Andrew Boysen Jr., will lead the Velvet Pastures Wind Ensemble in a concert of Grand Wind Music. The program will begin in 1781 with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s monumental Serenade No. 10 for winds ‘Gran Partita’. The evening will continue two hundred years later with Grand Pianola Music, composed in 1981 by New Hampshire-raised composer, John Adams. Lecturer of music, Dr. Mathilde Handelsman, and Edward Cho will be the piano soloists in the Adams work. Professor of Musicology, and Department Chair, Rob Haskins, will provide an accompanying lecture on the development of wind music.

The Velvet Pastures Wind Ensemble is made up of UNH Music alumni and other seacoast area professional musicians. It is dedicated to performing serious wind music at the highest level. The ensemble was founded during the pandemic at a nearby elk farm in Lee, NH from where it draws its name. The first meeting was an open-air reading session dedicated to Stravinsky’s Octet. This session led to an all-Stravinsky debut concert at the University of New Hampshire in the Fall of 2021.
