The Museum of Art is bringing you virtual conversations with Alumni from the Department of Art and Art History. Our first conversation features the artist Tara Lewis, '92, a painter based in New York City and New Hampshire.
Tara Lewis '92, received a B.A. in Studio Art, studying painting, drawing, printmaking and photography in the Department of Art & Art History at UNH. She completed her master’s degree in Visual Studies and Teaching at Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Tara maintains a vibrant studio practice in both New York City and New Hampshire, where she is also Professor of Art at Phillips Exeter Academy. Tara paints contemporary figurative portraits that redefine pop culture icons, largely informed by a sustained exploration of her childhood memories of cartoons, MTV and movies.
Tara's evolving collection of paintings challenge conventional portraiture with unique focus on female agency and contemporary complexities of femininity. The paintings weave a fresh new narrative.
