I have research interests in 19th-century American travel writing and in landscape and urban writings, transatlantic literary interactions, and connections between literature and the visual arts. My 2018 monograph explores the intersection of these subjects: American Travel Literature, Gendered Aesthetics, and the Italian Tour, 1824-1862. I have published book chapters and articles, in such journals as American Literary History, American Literature, and ESQ: A Journal of the American Renaissance, have co-edited two books—Transatlantic Women: Nineteenth-Century American Women Writers and Great Britain, and Margaret Fuller and Her Circles—and have edited a special issue of Nineteenth-Century Prose on Margaret Fuller. And I have served as president of the Margaret Fuller Society. My next project comes out of my abiding interest in antebellum print culture: a study of the ways in which writers (and artists) in newspapers and magazines in 1840-1860 mapped the new urban spaces of the U.S.
